All girls study a broad range of subjects which follow the National Curriculum. A second modern foreign language (Spanish) is offered in year 8. The majority of girls will study nine subjects for GCSE.

English

Emphasis is placed on the core skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. In addition, girls are encouraged to develop a lively and imaginative approach to their study of language and literature.

Mathematics

In the early years, basic arithmetic is stressed as a firm foundation for future studies. Algebra, statistics, graph work, computer skills and geometry are introduced and the girls are encouraged to think for themselves and solve problems. Able pupils in Year 10 are able to commence study for GCSE Additional Mathematics. GCSE modular mathematics is offered.

French

Year 7 pupils follow on from the Junior Department with a rapid revision course to accommodate newcomers with no previous knowledge.

Spanish

Year 8 pupils are able to study Spanish as a second foreign language. A range of activities takes place to provide an insight into the customs and culture of Spain.

Science

The syllabus in Years 7-9 follows the guidelines laid down by the National Curriculum. For GCSE, students can opt either for Science and Additional Science or for Separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

History

The use of original source material and first hand experience is encouraged. Historical visits and fieldwork form and integral part of the course.

Geography

The syllabus encourages pupils to acquire skills for geographical understanding such as data interpretation, graph and map analysis. Fieldwork is also an integral part of the course and is an important tool in developing geographical concepts.

Religious Education

The course is broadly based, taking in Christian beliefs and ethics with reference to the World's other major religions. Pupils are encouraged to think about and develop their own beliefs.

Art

Year 7 pupils receive a broad spectrum of art skills and experiences, including extensive pencil work, painting and 3D skills, using textiles and clay.

Drama

There is one major school play or musical per year. Workshops also take place througout the year. Speech and Drama examinations can be taken with the English Speaking Board. There are regular visits to the theatre for all year groups as part of their curriculum studies.

Music

As well as being a part of the main curriculum, pupils participate in choral and instrumental groups. Instruction is provided in solo singing, piano, woodwind, brass, drums, and string instruments (including cello, guitar and violin). Each year, opportunities are provided for pupils to participate in concerts, musical productions, competitions and workshops.

Technology

Practical and written assignments are set. In Years 7 and 8, pupils are involved in Food Technology, Textiles and Resistant Materials projects and they are given the opportunity to be creative in their use of different materials. This helps to develop design and practical skills.

Information and communications technology (ICT)

Years 7 and 8 pupils develop and apply their skills in word processing, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, databases and graphics.

Personal social health education

The course deals with a series of issues including topics such as friendships, leisure, codes of behaviour, bullying, study techniques and personal relationships. It also includes sex education taught within a moral framework.

Sport

Hockey, Netball, Cross-Country, Gymnastics, Tennis, Rounders, Athletics, Swimming are taught. The Sports Hall provides us with year round facilities, particularly for Gymnastics. Regular matches are arranged with local schools and teams are entered for the Independent Schools Association competitions both in the North West and at National level. Years 10 and 11 are introduced to Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball, Squash and fitness. The Department has recently acquired a trampolene, thanks to the generosity of the PTA.

Careers

There is a comprehensive Careers Education and Guidance programme, with close links to both ISCO (Independent Schools Careers Organisation) and Connexions, the National careers service. Careers lessons take place from Year 9 and discussion takes place regarding their own capabilities, option choices and possible careers. Throughout Years 10 and 11, the girls follow a widely based careers course. Lectures, assignments, visits and guest speakers are arranged. The pupils also visit a number of state schools and independent colleges. In Year 11, all pupils undergo psychometric tests organized by the ISCO to help them with their career planning. At this stage they also receive advice and guidance to aid a smooth transition to the most appropriate post 16 courses and establishments.

Extra curricular activities

A wide ranging programme of extra curricular activities is offered to girls in the Senior Department. Regular practices for all major sports, choir and instrumental groups are held. There also clubs for Drama, Gymnastics, Design Technology and Languages. We also have links with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Charities

Pupils in Year 9 co-ordinate charity events throughout the year. Charities which we have supported include NSPCC, Jeans for Genes, UNICEF, Dr.Barnados, Comic Relief and Breast Cancer Awareness.
