English

In this department, we are fully aware of the position of English at the very heart of the curriculum. Our aim is not only to maximise the academic potential of each student, but also to try to create a real enjoyment of the subject.

Key Stages 3 and 4 both involve extensive work on language, comprehension, grammar and spellings, on essays, poems and other forms of original writing and a sustained appreciation of the works of writers, poets and playwrights from diverse cultures, backgrounds and periods in history.

We particularly attempt to develop a liking for lively discussion and independent thought amongst our students, but also a lasting appreciation of live theatre. To this end, each year sees visits to such productions as the deliciously spooky ‘Woman in Black’, the iconic teenage favourite ‘Blood Brothers’ and Shakespeare’s enduring masterful ‘Macbeth.’
